Advice on Moving Into Your First Apartment

Renting your first apartment is quite a substantial personal milestone, which can be both exhilarating and overwhelming. If you’ve made an effort to hunt for apartments, found your place, and scheduled a move in with your landlord, then you are well on your way. That being said, there are a few steps that you can take to make the most of this experience. We, at L&J Transportation, have moved hundreds of tenants into their first apartments over the years. Follow these pointers to assist you in staying organized during the process.

Familiarize Yourself with the Layout of the Space

If you’ve found an apartment and signed a lease, you probably have an idea of what type of layout you are working with. Ideally, you have had the chance to view it in person. Typically, just before moving in the landlord will conduct a final walk through with you. Take this time to familiarize yourself more fully with your new place. We at L&J Transportation recommend bringing a measuring tape to take dimensions so you can be confident about the furniture you plan to bring along. Where possible, take pictures and the measurements of windows to purchase blinds or curtains. If you reside out of town, so much of this information will be guesswork. However, in some instances, a landlord may be willing to take measurements or pictures to send to you.

Set Up Utilities Ahead of Time

When moving into your first apartment, make sure you are able to arrange for your utilities to be turned on before you arrive. Just because the water and electricity were on when you were viewing the apartment doesn’t mean that you’ll find them on when you move in. Find out which utilities you need to turn on in your name and which ones are already included in the rent. Also, do not schedule your internet or cable installation the same time you are moving as you could miss your appointment and get charged an extra fee. If you work with a moving specialist at L&J Transportation, you will have a clear move in date and time well in advance so that you may plan your cable appointment accordingly.

Research Your Moving Company

Hiring experienced apartment movers is an essential step to a hassle-free day. There are so many moving companies, but it’s important to note that they do not all offer the same quality service. Check to ascertain that they are listed with the Better Business Bureau and ensure they are fully bonded and insured. Many people feel apprehensive about the details of a move to their first apartment. By contacting a moving specialist at L&J Transportation you can rest assured that an expert will be there to talk you through each step. Call today for more information.
