Our packers and movers have put together this list of ways that you can be greener for your next move:
Choose green packing supplies. Many moving companies provide Styrofoam packing peanuts, plastic bubble wrap, or other plastic-based fillers. The full service movers at L&J offer these in “green” form, meaning they are recyclable or biodegradable. In general, packing with recycled packing paper or newspaper is also a green choice.
Packing with household items. One of the biggest ways you can save on having to buy or use packing materials is to use household items. Kitchen items can be packed alongside kitchen towels, oven mitts, and other kitchen textiles. Living room electronics can be packed in throw blankets and pillows. Other good household items for packing include towels, sweatshirts, scarves, and sheets.
Re-purposed moving boxes. Visit retail and grocery stores nearby and ask what they do with their cardboard boxes; generally retailers are happy to give these away, since otherwise they go into the dumpster. As a full service mover, L&J also offers recycled boxes. Once you unpack, you can break the boxes down and take them to a recycling center, or pass them along to a friend who is moving.
Recycled plastic bins. For items that you prefer to put inside plastic bins, select those made from recycled plastic. Not only are they relatively easy to find at different stores, but they can also be incorporated into your storage systems in your new home. Plastic bins are easy to use and keep items in good condition when storing them inside linen closets, bathroom cabinets, attics, basements, and more.
